Samsung Electronics Reorganizes to Fight Slump

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Samsung Electronics Co. announced a major restructuring Friday, consolidating business operations into two divisions as South Korea's most powerful and iconic corporation deals with the slowing global economy and expectations of looming red ink.The new organization was included in an announcement of personnel changes at the company as well as at the broader Samsung Group of which it serves as flagship. Samsung Electronics CEO Lee Yoon-woo, who retains his position, will also take on the added responsibility of overseeing a new Device Solution division combining the semiconductor and LCD businesses, according to the announcement. The company also plans a Digital Media and Communications division to be headed by Choi Gee-sung, bringing together under one umbrella televisions, mobile phones and other consumer electronics such as printers, computers and home appliances, according to Samsung spokesman James Chung. Samsung Electronics is the world's biggest manufacturer of memory chips, liquid crystal displays and flat screen televisions. It ranks second behind Finland's Nokia Corp. in mobile phones. The company, however, has been struggling of late amid the global downturn and falling prices for semiconductors and flat screens. Its net profit declined 44 percent in the third quarter of 2008 from the same period in 2007. Samsung is scheduled to announce fourth-quarter earnings on Jan. 23 and some analysts are forecasting the company will swing to a net loss. ''We needed to effectively respond to the current global recession,'' Samsung spokeswoman Hwang Eun-ju said regarding the reason for the changes. She also said that Samsung will cut the pay of top executives by up to 20 percent. The conglomerate-wide personnel changes are the second since the resignation in April of Lee Kun-hee as chairman of Samsung Electronics, the post from where he oversaw the entire Samsung Group. The position of Samsung chairman remains unfilled. Lee Yoon-woo, the current CEO, assumed that position in May, in line with other personnel movements. Samsung Electronics also reshuffled some of its businesses at that time though not on the scale announced Friday. Lee Kun-hee, the figure credited with building Samsung into a global force, resigned after being indicted on charges of tax evasion, for which he was eventually convicted and handed a suspended prison sentence. He was acquitted on separate breach of trust charges. Besides Samsung Electronics, the conglomerate consists of dozens of companies with interests in shipbuilding, construction, life insurance and leisure. The group is said to account for about 20 percent of South Korea's exports. A total of 25 executives were affected by the personnel changes at group companies, including 14 promotions, Samsung said. ''A new wave of young talent was chosen to overcome the global downturn,'' Samsung said in the statement. Samsung's semiconductor and mobile phone businesses in recent years under the direction of two key executives -- Chang Hwang-gyu, dubbed ''Mr. Chip'' by local media, and Lee Ki-tae, known as ''Mr. Phone'' -- focused on putting the company at the forefront of technological innovation. Hwang, most recently chief technology officer, and Lee, vice chairman for external relations, left those positions Friday, according to Chung, the spokesman. Their departure signals a new focus. ''This means Samsung's strategy is moving from high-tech competition to profitability,'' said Lee Min-hee, an analyst at Dongbu Securities. Lee said he expects Samsung to record a net loss for the final three months of 2008, which he said would be the company's first on a quarterly basis. Shares in Samsung Electronics rose 2.1 percent to close at 469,000 won ($345.42) Friday. Samsung's share price fell 19 percent in 2008.

Today is a very unique day, August 8th 2008. The Chinese believe that 8 is a lucky number, that's why tonight at 08:08pm, they are going to open the 2008 Olympic games. Some people might have chosen these date as their special day, mostly maybe their wedding date, just like last year when we had the 070707. Some people bought car plate number or mobile phone number or any thing that contain a lucky number (or in Indonesia we called it "Nomor cantik/bautiful number").
Some people also think there are unlucky numbers like 4 or 13. And sometimes they avoid this number, like in some building they change the 4th floor to 3A and 3B or 13th floor to 12A and 12B.
But do you really think that these numbers can give you prosperity or change your luck?

Live TV Streaming II

After the previous online TV streaming called indline, now we have another provider, which I personally think much better. First of all, it is streaming directly from your web-browser. Therefore you don't need to install anything and you don't have to worry about compatibility issue. You can open it in Internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or any web-browser in your windows system, and even you can now watch in mac with your Safari or Mozilla for mac. Just like the previous one, it has only two channel for now, which is Trans TV and Metro TV. But so far it is very smooth streaming...The website name is imediabiz.tv, great job...

11th September

It's been 6 years since the 11th September tragedy struck the world. I myself was quite shocked and can't believe that it happened. I was still studying in Singapore at that time, but my dad is in the US and I was worried about him, even though he did not stay in New York. But because it was like a war, I was quite worried. However nothings happened.
At this day 6 years ago, history change and the world views upon terrorism was changed. I hope this tragedy will still be the largest terrorism tragedy and no other will follow. This should remind us to love our family, those who we know and those surround us more...

Virginia Tech Shooting

33 people died, and most of the victims are student, in the shooting incident in Virginia Tech University by a Korean National Student. Most of the news confirm that the shooter was a loner and some said he was a weird student. Even President bush in his speech said to reach out to those who are away from family and those who are lonely. Unofficial issue said that there is one Indonesian PHD student killed in the incident. Actually this kind of tragedy happened in my high school days. It was kinda tragic I guess. I hope we can also be aware more to our environment and cheer up those beside us. Deep condolences to the victims and family.

IPDN

IPDN or used to be called STPDN is one Indonesian institution or school to educate future government leader. I believe most of you have heard about the news spread all over Indonesian media last week. However this is not new actually. For those who haven't read the news you can read at liputan6 or Jakarta Post(English). Basically this non-military institution use military way to educate their student. And the result is brutality. The Jakarta Post even called IPDN as The Killing Field Institution. It is recorded at least 10 victims are killed in this institution. Is it because of the system or is it because of some irresponsible element? Well maybe you can let me know your opinion...

Another plane crash

This year started with a terrible accident of Adam Air missing in Kalimantan-Sulawesi water. And just this morning the (Supposedly) best Air Transport Operator in Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, have another accident in Yogjakarta. This Boeing 737-400 airplane crash while landing in Yogyakarta's Adi Sucipto Airport. This add to one more bad mark in the Indonesians transportation history. If last time most people trying to reduce their air travel by budget airlines and took Garuda Indonesia even though it is more expensive, now I don't know who we can trust to travel by air in Indonesia. I think the government should really consider to make a strict rules on air transport. And air transport operator should really take care of their flight carrier.

Funny signs

Its been so long since i haven't update my blog.I'm very busy these days with my work and stuff. Well anyway, I want to share some funny signs that I got from various places. Let me know what you think about these signs.














This picture was taken in Bekasi Traffic Light. Zoom in on the motorbike rider's helmet. "Orang bodoh tak mengerti lampu merah" or "Stupid people don't obey traffic light"















This picture was taken along cisarua-puncak road. The sign says "Dilarang buang sampah disini" or "Do not litter". I don't think people around there understand what the sign means.















This picture was taken on my way to Semarang, along the Pantura way. "Dengan semangat Proklamasi 17 Agustus 1945 mari kita berhenti berbohong" or "With the independence day spirit 17 August 1945 let us stop lying". Does it mean that poeple in this area lie alot?

Earthquake

Yesterday evening about 6pm, another earthquake hit Jakarta. They said it is bigger than the quake on monday. According to the news the quake was centred just south of the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra at 6 richter-magnitude. I was driving towards downtown when the quake occurs, but I can't feel anything at that time. And I didn't see anyone panic at that time. However I heard the news in radio and they said that the quake was quite big especially those who works in skycrappers building. At that point of time I immediately call Artha to find out whether she felt the quake. And when I called her, she was already on the way to go down from her office at 25th floor and she was panic. The traffic was very heavy at that time, and when i reached her office I saw a lot of people, I guess they were evacuated from the building.
I hope this will be the last quake for Indonesia....

Rules are made to be broken

Yesterday I was in Kelapa Gading mall. And when i was about to look for parking, I saw this lady talking on her handphone sitting right beside a signboard saying, " Dilarang Duduk Disini" (Please do not sit here). Hmm...i guess the picture above is self-explanatory...:D

Flood in dry season

I was on my way to church yesterday for choir practice, and I was driving on the usual road from my office. Normally the traffic is not so heavy even during peak hours, at least I can still drive at 40km/hours. However something unusual happenned yesterday, the traffic was terrible. I simply stuck there and can't move. Its like 2km/hours only. I didn't know what happen, but I can see that it was a very long queue. I thought there was an accident or something. Well nothing much I can do, I can't make a u turn also cause I know other road will be even worst than this.
After about 45minutes, I reached the end of the traffic jam. And to my surprise the cause was flood....hah!!!!!...yes it was a flood, the water hike about 30cm. Vehicles have to reduce their speed, and a lot of motorcycles was brokedown and causing the traffic jam. It was horrible, It was like driving in a river...But Thanks God the flooded road was not that long, and I reached church on time. I managed to take a few pictures ..hehehehhe..

Special One

Great posting from Chimit's blog. I think all of us should have our own check list and quality measured in choosing your special one or your partner in life. These are some points, which I also think it is important to have:

- He/she must bring us nearer to God, not further.
- He/she must put God first, and help us put God first, and don't mind to be put second.
- He/she must be supportive towards our hobbies/interest.
- He/she must be willing to be there when we need him/her.
- He/she must be nice, tender, loving, and caring (TLC for short).
- We can talk about almost anything with him/her.
- He/she doesn't get in the way of our job, friendship, family, etc.
- Just a thought of him/her makes ourself feel so happy.
- We can be our true self when we are with him/her.
- We are proud to mention his/her name to others.
- We must be able to bear him/her at his/her worst (time, mood, anger, look, etc. you name it)
- Both person must enjoy being in each other's company, and doesn't feel embarrassed when "spotted" together by friends.
- We do think that he/she is Mr/Miss Right
- He/she completes us and what we lack, in many ways.
- We must sincerely think that we can marry him/her in the future.
- And lastly, of course, the emotional pull and the chemistry must be there to get started, right? but the rest are needed to keep it moving

Another thing that I wanna add is that, after all the check list you might also wanna do a quality control..hehehhe..Engineers way of doing things...You can consult with your family, friends and your close one, they are like ur QC manager to check the quality and ensure that you get the best. And i believe each one of us has a perfect match out there. Not perfect by nature, but by process....

Demonstration

Last Saturday after my Academic Writing Course, on my way to church for Youth service, I was caught in a heavy traffic at the HI-Roundabout (Bunderan HI). It is not normal to have a heavy traffic on weekends, I wonder. Well finally I passed the HI-Roundabout and I saw a huge crowds with flags and banners. They were demostrating on the very sensitive issue to Denmark and European countries, well u know whats all about...I managed to take some pictures from my car though...

Starbucks or Starbooks

Yesterday i went to one shopping mall in jakarta down town area. And to my surprise, I found this logo, "Starbooks". It sounds like starbucks and it also have a similar logo. Kinda funny...hehehehe...

Lesser Sleep Reduce Your Creativity

Are you surprise?Lesser sleep could decrease your creative ability, wow....
Recent research from American Medical Association found out that when you reduce one or two hours time of your sleep, it would decrease your concentration ability. According to the research, "Sleeping on time is as important as coming to school on time". And not enough slees is also the major problems in car accident and also, what struck me , the major problem in your creative ability. If not enough sleep can reduce your creative ability, does it mean that more sleep can increase your creativity...hehehehhe...interesting

Bali Bomb II

It is still clear in my head 3 years ago when my lecturer said he want to go to Bali for Holiday, after the first Bali Bomb. He said, "Now the price is extremely cheap to go there and also lightning never strike twice at the same place". Well I guess it’s true that it didn't strike at the same spot. My deepest condolence for the bombing victims and family. Would you still go to Bali after this?

Fuel Price Increase

Fuel Price increase was announced by Government last night. The increase was about 88%. "Premium" gasoline which is normally at Rp 2400/USD 0.24, now becomes Rp. 4500/USD0.45 or about 50cents. And next year there's going to be another increase until level to the world market price. Fuel Increase = Everything increase.
